Chesterwood, near Stockbridge, MA, was French&#8217;s summer retreat for many years. It&#8217;s\u00a0 now\u00a0 a National Historic Trust with a small scale version of the Lincoln statue in the artist&#8217;s studio. Love the prickles!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, we&#8217;d visited Ashintully Gardens in Tyringham, formerly a private home and now maintained by the Trustees of Reservations Land trusts.\u00a0 The formal gardens include features like a Fountain Pond, Pine Park, Rams Head Terrace, Bowling Green, Regency Bridge, and many others, most created by John McLennan, Jr., son of the Senator. I didn&#8217;t have time to walk the entire six hundred acres but it&#8217;s a beautiful estate noted for rolling hills, deciduous trees and carefully crafted stonework.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_847\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Ashintullyfountainpicnik1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-847\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-847\" title=\"Ashintullyfountainpicnik\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Ashintullyfountainpicnik1-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Ashintullyfountainpicnik1-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Ashintullyfountainpicnik1-873x1024.jpg 873w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Ashintullyfountainpicnik1.jpg 1829w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-847\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fountain at Ashintully, Tyringham, MA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We spent a night at the Lenox Club, founded in 1864 as a club for &#8211;you guessed it&#8211;gentlemen, where the croquet lawn is kept in perfect condition and some rooms have bathrooms with wonderful claw-foot tubs.\u00a0 A very twenty-first century wedding was taking place that night and the next morning the group was kind enough to give us a bite of the brunch being served to very hung- over friends.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_843\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/LenoxClub.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-843\" class=\"size-full wp-image-843\" title=\"LenoxClub\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/LenoxClub.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lenox Club, Lenox, MA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Berkshires in summer always seems like picnic country to me so here&#8217;s a recipe for French potato salad which is great to take along as it doesn&#8217;t contain mayonnaise and can easily be made ahead of time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>French Potato Salad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serves 4<\/p>\n<p>2 lbs small russet potatoes<\/p>\n<p>\u00bc c. dry white wine<\/p>\n<p>1 T white wine vinegar<\/p>\n<p>1 T fresh lemon juice<\/p>\n<p>1 t Dijon mustard<\/p>\n<p>\u00bc t white pepper (I use regular ground pepper)<\/p>\n<p>\u00bc cup olive oil<\/p>\n<p>2 T\u00a0 chopped scallions<\/p>\n<p>2 T chopped parsley<\/p>\n<p>Scrub potatoes and drop into a pot of salted boiling water to cover. Boil about 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender when stuck with point of knife.<\/p>\n<p>Cut potatoes into \u00bc \u201c slices, being careful not to burn your hands. Place in a single layer in shallow dish. Pour the wine over the warm slices and toss very gently; then set aside so they absorb the wine. (Note: this can be done hours ahead. Do not refrigerate.)<\/p>\n<p>Beat vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, salt and pepper in a small bowl until salt dissolves. Add the oil a bit at a time and whisk until it thickens. Stir in scallions. Before serving, pour dressing over potatoes and add the parsley.
