The group, organized by Il Chiostro, that runs a variety of programs in Italy and elsewhere, housed us at Borgo San Fedele, near Radda in Chianti.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5005\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5005\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5005\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Borgo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Restored Borgo San Fedele<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">The Borgo, once a large Romanesque church that had fallen into near total disrepair, has been entirely restored. The marble stairs throughout including those up to my attractive second floor room provided an excellent workout. The property hosts private and corporate events, workshops and weddings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Between bouts of painting we went to several nearby Tuscan towns including Gaole in Chianti, (near where my husband and I rented a villa for our family twenty-two years ago), Castellana and Radda. One mildly rainy day we drove to Sienna where I went inside the Picolomini Library, tucked into the black-and-white striped Duomo.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5008\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5008\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5008\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Picolmini-2-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Picolmini-2-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Picolmini-2.jpg 517w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In Picolomini Library (These folks got the memo about matching outfits)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Inside the Library are manuscripts and terrific frescos including one depicting Raphael, the painter, in chic maroon tights. The cathedral itself is a jewel and the library a special treasure.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5010 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/harvest--263x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/harvest--263x300.jpg 263w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/harvest-.jpg 561w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At a vendemia, (grape harvest), we watched workers wielding scissors to clip bunches of grapes off the vines before dropping them into plastic buckets. Filled buckets were tossed into a tractor-truck heading to the mechanical crushing area, Gone are the days of barefoot grape stomping rendered so hilariously by Lucille Ball.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5014\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5014\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5014\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Untitled-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"168\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Who did not love Lucy?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There is a newish (2006) archeological museum in Castellina exhibiting finds from Etruscan burial mounds. The museum is next to the fortress that has a walkway at the top for a wonderful view which I skipped as time ran out. Vaguely scholarly note:\u00a0 the Etruscans, who peopled ancient Italy, passed on many cultural and artistic traditions to the Romans and occupied<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5015\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5015\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5015\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Etruscans.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"191\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ancient Etruscan settlements<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">what is now Tuscany and a great deal more of modern Italy.<\/p>\n<p>During the week I ate lots of pasta, gelato, various riffs on salami and what I\u2019ve incorrectly been calling biscotti for years. \u00a0Biscotti \u00a0translates as \u2018cookie\u2019; cantucci are specific \u2018cookies.\u2019 (Think of \u2018cookie\u2019 being the category and \u2018chocolate chip\u2019 the specific kind of cookie.) The traditional way to eat cantucci is to dip them into Vin Santo, a sweet dessert wine, but I happily inhaled them\u00a0 out of the bag.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a video of making cantucci although the presenter refers to them as biscotti.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch\/lx9FnQ0G0t4\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lx9FnQ0G0t4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Typically, biscotti\u00a0 are very hard \u2013 a treat for the dentist, hence the classic dunking. To complete your experience, corral a bottle of Vin Santo and listen to a snatch of Italian opera, maybe something by Puccini.\u00a0 Think of the rolling hills of Tuscany.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I spent a delightful week in Tuscany in a watercolor workshop.
