Looks like The Municipal Transit Authority dropped the PR ball because the other senior auditors \u2014also <em>au courant<\/em> New Yorkers\u2014in my Art in New York Class at John Jay College didn\u2019t know about this space either. \u00a0GCM opened in late January, 2023; it\u2019s a wonderful (and useful) space that includes the longest escalator in New York,<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4863\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4863\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4863\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/escalator.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">For long escalator fans<\/p><\/div>\n<p>stunning tiles in blue, purple, light green and cyan and knock-out public art.<\/p>\n<p>Among the permanent displays are huge glass mosaics by Yayoi Kusama and Kiki Smith that are both stunning and more or less impervious to damage as they can easily be wiped clean. Kusama\u2019s work, the 120-foot long <em>A Message of Love Directly from My Heart unto the Universe, <\/em>features heads, suns, amoeba-like shapes and her signature polka dots. It\u2019s full of color and life.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4864\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4864\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4864\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Kusama-mosaic-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"177\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Part of Kusama mosaic<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Smith\u2019s abstract <\/em>River Light is composed of blue and white irregularly-shaped tiles that reference sunshine glinting on the East River. Four smaller Smith works nod to Long Island with depictions of wild turkeys, a deer standing among golden reeds, Long Island Sound and an abstracted wave pulling back from a rocky beach.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4865\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4865\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4865\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Kiki-Smith-and-deer-mosaic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"250\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4865\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kiki Smith with deer mosaic<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">The permanent installations incorporate a three-part work by Nick Cave,<i> Each One, Every One, Equal All,<\/i> a mosaic version of his Soundsuit sculptures, which camouflage the wearer\u2019s shape hiding gender, race, and class and make noise when the wearer moves. These practically dance off the walls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are also changing exhibits including digital artwork such as a video of people watching and reacting to being \u2018watched\u2019 and another of a playful man and his hat. Down the center one corridor is a panel of photographs by Paul Pfeiffer showing a street performer known as Da Gold Man who has appeared for years as <span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">a living statue in Times Square. Kaplan who teaches at Hunter and John Jay; has run adult programs at MOMA; school programs at the Guggenheim and offers private and small group tours in museums and galleries throughout New York. Plate pieces like a mosaic, drizzle with a good vinaigrette (Jessica uses a \u2018hot\u2019 honey dressing I thought too complicated), sprinkle with salt and pepper. (If you opt to make this ahead toss it all into a baggie and let it marinate with the dressing\u2014don\u2019t add avocado until ready to serve.)<\/p>\n<p>Serve humming <em>Chattanooga Choo-Choo<\/em> or <em>I\u2019ve Been Working on the Railroad\u2014<\/em>up the GCM theme by adding Long Island Iced Tea.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When significant developments take place in New York City I try staying current but \u00a0knew nothing about Grand Central Madison (GCM), the terminal below Grand Central proper that connects the East Side to the Long Island Railroad.
