The towns: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manorola and Riomaggiore, sit on the Ligurian Sea, part of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>After almost a week in Florence (another story), I went to Cinque Terre to join a watercolor workshop, specifically watercolor <em>en plein<\/em> air, which gave me new respect for Monet, Renoir and Sisley<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4845\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4845\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4845\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Monet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"170\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4845\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Claude Monet<\/p><\/div>\n<p>toting their stuff around. Could have all that lugging have contributed to Van Gogh\u2019s madness?\u00a0 Probably not but I could have used a caddy to help deal with my folding easel, collapsible stool, palette, water containers, spray bottle, sponge, brushes\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Our group, one of many workshops run by Il Chiostro, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilchiostro.com\">www.ilchiostro.com<\/a>, was based at La Cabana, a hotel high on a cliff overlooking Monterosso, serviced by a (steep) path and frequent shuttle service to and from the town below. Not only was the setting lovely, it got us away from the town which gets crowded especially when cruise ships disgorge passengers.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4847\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sunset-from-La-Cabana-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sunset-from-La-Cabana-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sunset-from-La-Cabana-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sunset-from-La-Cabana-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sunset-from-La-Cabana-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sunset-from-La-Cabana-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/> Ambitious hikers can trek from town to town; we visited several by train and traveled by ferry to Porto Venera, a town slightly south of Riomaggiore.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Houses in Cinque Terre are a glowing rainbow of color as they cling to the cliffs\u2014 perfect for painters. Besides <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4849\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/townjpg-300x152.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/townjpg-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/townjpg.jpg 316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>masses of tourists and great gelato, each of the towns have lots of restaurants serving terrific pastas, bruscetta, foccia and seafood\u2014anchovies in various guises are part of many offerings as are squid, mussels, cuttlefish, etc. My two fave dishes of the week were faggotini, pasta shaped like a purse with a filling of soft pecorino cheese<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4850\" style=\"width: 255px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4850\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4850\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sacchetti-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"206\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4850\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Faggotini<\/p><\/div>\n<p>and pear and a pumpkin (rather like our acorn squash) risotto. More complex than they seem, I am unlikely to reproduce either.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In between bouts of painting there was plenty of free time to explore the area, shop, swim or just hang out enjoying the views often with a glass of wine in hand. This is a more streamlined version:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pesto<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4853\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/pesto-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/pesto-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/pesto-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/pesto-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/pesto-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/pesto.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00bc cup pine nuts<\/p>\n<p>1 or 2 cloves garlic<\/p>\n<p>salt and pepper<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd cup olive oil<\/p>\n<p>\u00bc Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, grated<\/p>\n<p>Put pine nuts, basil, garlic, salt and pepper in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until ingredients are chopped but not totally mushy. (Purists do this with a mortar and pestle; be kind to yourself and don\u2019t.)<\/p>\n<p>With the processor running, slowly add the olive oil. Then add the cheese which some recipes direct you to incorporate after the pesto base is out of the food processor-why, I can\u2019t\u00a0 imagine but suit yourself.<\/p>\n<p>In Cinque Terre pesto is often served with trenetti; you can use linguine or almost any long pasta shape you prefer. I freeze extra pesto in ice cube trays and pop them out when wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Serve with white wine (or sparkling water or whatever you like); the area\u2019s whites are pale yellow and delicate.\u00a0 If you want to toast in a group, the easy Italian way is to touch one other glass (rather than scrambling to connect with everyone), while saying: <em>Toccato uno, Toccato tutti <\/em>meaning \u2018touch one, touch all.\u2019 If you said cheers I doubt if anyone would object. Just smile.<\/p>\n<p>Drinking while painting could be fun although your artwork may suffer a tad.
