B. and Katharine White who met at The New Yorker, ultimately moved to Maine and were married for forty-eight years.\u00a0 Visiting Brooklin, we went to the Friend Memorial Library to see the E. B. White book collection and noted with pleasure that the volumes look used and appreciated.\u00a0\u00a0 The <em>Stuart Little<\/em> book jacket above is  the version I adored, as a child. Every time I went to the 79th Street boat pond, I half-expected to see Stuart at the helm of his craft.<\/p>\n<p>After Brooklin, we went to Stonington and then to Deer Isle, accessible <a href=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/DeerIsleMap11.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-502\" title=\"DeerIsleMap\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/DeerIsleMap11-300x208.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/DeerIsleMap11-300x208.gif 300w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/DeerIsleMap11.gif 526w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>by bridge but somehow suspended in another time, maybe the\u00a0 50s.We drove down the Sunshine Road (no kidding) got out of the car and stumbled onto what looked like a Red Grooms set\u2014large sculptures everywhere, some sitting on a cabin porch.\u00a0 Then we came to a cottage\/coffee shop where we ate wonderful scones accompanied by samples of some of the jams.\u00a0 The place is so low-key,\u00a0 it took a while to figure out that one function of the cottage is a &#8220;showroom&#8221; for the small batch jams, preserves, chutneys and marmalades made under the Nervous Nellie label.<\/p>\n<p>In life, Nellie is delightful Anne Beerits.\u00a0 The company name and identity were coined twenty-five years ago by Peter, Anne&#8217;s partner, who thought Nervous Nellie&#8217;s was a better name for a\u00a0 fledgling jam business than Deer Isle Jams. How right he was! Simultaneously spicy and sweet, it&#8217;s a great accompaniment to any meat, enlivens a sandwich, and becomes a great hors d&#8217;oeuvre&#8211; top a cracker with cream cheese or cheddar and add a dollop of the chutney.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_501\" style=\"width: 140px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/imagesCACKHHSK.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-501\" class=\"size-full wp-image-501\" title=\"NN Catalogue\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/imagesCACKHHSK.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-501\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nervous Nellie catalogue<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Use any of the chutneys\u00a0 on a meat sandwich instead of mustard or mayonnaise\u00a0 or enliven mayo with one and thin further with plain yogurt.\u00a0 Flavor yogurt with Blueberry Chutney and spread on pork tenderloin for the last  few minutes of cooking&#8211; your mouth and your guests if you share&#8211; will thank you.\u00a0 Visit Nervous Nellie&#8217;s (open year &#8217;round but I prefer Maine in the summer) have a snack, go birdwatching,\u00a0 and enjoy a unique place that produces top-quality food products\u00a0 with flair and humor.<\/p>\n<p>For a recipe, check out Nellie&#8217;s website that lists a bunch of suggestions on using their products.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brooklin, ME, is a tiny town that was\u00a0 home to E.
