On Tuesday, Temple Emanu-El offered a free Handel &amp; Hannakkah (their spelling) concert with counter- tenor Anthony Roth Costanza and mezzo- soprano Isabel Leonard together with <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4406\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Handel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"255\" \/>the Clarion Choir and orchestra playing period instruments no less. <em>Judas Maccabeus<\/em>, written by Handel five years after he wrote <em>The Messiah<\/em>, has similarities though this oratorio focuses on the rebellion against King Antiochus that allowed the Jews to reclaim the second temple. The huge sanctuary seats 2500&#8211; and almost all the seats were filled.<\/p>\n<p>Friday Emanu-El had a classic Shabbat service enlivened with Hannakuh (my spelling) music and performers from the Yiddish production of <em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>. The performance, um, service was pretty rousing all around ending with the dreidel song for which one of the cantors donned sunglasses and rocked it.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4398\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Fiddler.pg_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"255\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Saturday I trekked to Brooklyn\u2019s Dyker Heights to see the houses adorned in zillions of lights, total holiday one-upmanship. My express bus was comfy and landed me less than two blocks from my destination. A friend and I walked around gawping and especially liked the more over-the-top\u00a0 homes. Santa riding a polar bear is a new look as was a<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4400\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4400\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4400\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Dyker-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Dyker-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Dyker.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4400\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dyker Heights house in all its modest decoration<\/p><\/div>\n<p>display featuring six reindeer\u2014possibly made where the classic legend is ignored or not appreciated. In this display, poor Rudolph didn\u2019t even get a nod.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday was the annual Park Avenue tree lighting with streets blocked off so people could congregate. I thought crowds would be on the sparse side but no, the area was jammed\u00a0 with adults, babies, toddlers and a great many dogs. The event takes place in front of the Brick Church that went mod a few years back with colored lights. I forgot to wear my reindeer antlers but will get them out for Christmas day.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4402\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4402\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4402\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Briick.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brick Church with trees<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Very bright all around, a great contrast to last year.<\/p>\n<p>More lights\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Light Oven Baked Salmon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4404\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Salmon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3 Tbls low sodium soy sauce<\/p>\n<p>2 Tbls olive oil<\/p>\n<p>2 Tbls honey<\/p>\n<p>1 Tbls Dijon mustard<\/p>\n<p>2 cloves minced garlic (not in my house)<\/p>\n<p>1 lb salmon filet skin on<\/p>\n<p>Let salmon come to room temperature. Preheat oven to 400<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>.\u00a0 Line a 9&#215;13-inch baking dish (or any dish that will hold salmon) with foil or parchment paper for easy clean up.<\/p>\n<p>In small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, olive oil, honey, Dijon and minced garlic (if using.)<\/p>\n<p>Place salmon, skin side down, in baking dish. Pour about 2\/3 of the sauce over the salmon, reserving the rest. Bake for 15 minutes; brush on the remaining sauce. Bake 2-5 minutes more. Test for doneness by sticking knife into thickest part of fish. If flaky, even it a little pink, that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>Serve with dry white wine, sparkling water or pretty much any beverage of your choice.
