{"id":3500,"date":"2018-07-30T19:09:58","date_gmt":"2018-07-30T19:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/?p=3500"},"modified":"2018-07-30T19:09:58","modified_gmt":"2018-07-30T19:09:58","slug":"la-la-land","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/?p=3500","title":{"rendered":"La La Land"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This title has no relation to the film; it\u2019s how I felt several times during last week at Chautauqua.\u00a0 If anyone said a cross word I didn\u2019t hear it; when someone dropped something, inevitably others swooped in to pick it up. \u00a0It was niceness on steroids, a far cry from snarky, sometimes cranky, always opinionated New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p>The Chautauqua population skews older, (read plenty of gray hair, walkers and scooters), although there are lots of families with kids and dogs everywhere. Many houses are privately owned but others are rentals where visitors return year after year for a dose of concerts, theater, dance, literature and lectures. Chautauqua was started in the late 1800s by Methodist ministers so there\u2019s a healthy dose of God in many forms, largely Christian but Judaism and other spiritual practices are part of the mix.<\/p>\n<p>Each week has a theme; the week I visited it was \u201cThe Ethics of Dissent.\u201d Every day brings lots to do, so much so that many times a choice is required. I went to several concerts and a rehearsal by the excellent Chautauqua symphony; saw a wonderful production of <em>Candide<\/em>; went on a nature walk (learning that naturalist Euell Gibbons built up an<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3502\" style=\"width: 271px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3502\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3502\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CHA-gardentour-261x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CHA-gardentour-261x300.jpg 261w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CHA-gardentour.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 261px) 100vw, 261px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nature Walk &#8211;no one ate poison ivy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>immunity to poison ivy by eating small amounts daily until he could tolerate three large leaves \u2013why bother? ); heard several poets and writers read from their works; visited the fabulous library; fiddled with my watercolors; did a little, mild shopping for sandals; went to a seminar on living wills; trotted around the 750-acre<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3505\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CHA-garden-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CHA-garden-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CHA-garden.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Institution admiring the gorgeous gardens and took a daily Pilates class. (I could also have kayaked, sailed, played tennis or golf, gone to the art gallery, meditated in a class, baked challah and more.) One of the week\u2019s highlights was <em>NY Times<\/em> reporter Barri Weiss discussing her take on the \u201cnew\u201d seven dirty words, (the original ones were the creation of George Carlin, based on those that couldn\u2019t be said on television.) This is a link to Weiss\u2019 talk which I highly recommend: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NHaZOD-KxxA\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NHaZOD-KxxA<\/a>\u00a0 She\u2019s articulate, entertaining and knows how to address a crowd.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed at The Englewood, a guest house located very near the Amphitheater. The house is<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3503\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3503\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3503\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Englewood-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Englewood-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Englewood.jpg 636w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3503\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Englewood Guest House<\/p><\/div>\n<p>old, nicely renovated and cute; my little first floor apartment was perfect for one (two in a pinch\u2014literally) and I ran into other guests who were fun to be with.\u00a0 Olivia, who owns Englewood, is deeply invested in natural, organic foods and practices. One day\u2019s breakfast were the lightest pancakes I ever ate; another morning she produced a sort of tart she says is based on Paleo zucchini bread. This is her recipe but it doesn\u2019t have ingredient amounts because she\u2019s an intuitive &#8216;dash of this, pinch of that\u2019 kind of cook.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Breakfast Tart Olivia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3506\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CHA-breakfast-267x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CHA-breakfast-267x300.jpg 267w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CHA-breakfast.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A bag of Paleo zucchini bread mix<\/p>\n<p>1 stick butter<\/p>\n<p>Raisins<\/p>\n<p>Apples chopped into roughly \u00bd inch pieces<\/p>\n<p>Vanilla<\/p>\n<p>Maple syrup<\/p>\n<p>Mix all together. Flatten into a circle on parchment paper. Bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>And good luck. I\u2019m not a Paleo person but this was delicious. With it, we were offered tea, coffee and oj.
