{"id":3255,"date":"2017-06-18T23:23:44","date_gmt":"2017-06-18T23:23:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/?p=3255"},"modified":"2017-06-18T23:23:44","modified_gmt":"2017-06-18T23:23:44","slug":"listening-from-head-to-foot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/?p=3255","title":{"rendered":"Listening from Head to Foot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/mandala-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3262\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/mandala-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a>Currently I don\u2019t practice yoga but regardless, I\u2019m a fan of things Om-related.\u00a0 The whole Tibetan\/mystical\/artistic and, for some, spiritual gamut is brilliantly presented at the new Rubin Museum exhibition, <em>The World of Sound. <\/em>\u00a0(The Rubin itself is often overlooked among NYC museums as it\u2019s on West 17<sup>th<\/sup> Street in the space that once was Barney\u2019s, neither part of the uptown Museum Mile grouping nor downtown like the Whitney).<\/p>\n<p>The show is a stunner\u2014elegant and absorbing for eyes, ears and total body (sounds like one of those immersion tanks but trust me, it\u2019s not.) Works of art from the Rubin\u2019s permanent collection are displayed like the small, gold Milarepa, a statue of someone<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3257\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/singing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3257\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3257\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/singing-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/singing-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/singing.jpg 409w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3257\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Milarepa&#8211;listening to own singing<\/p><\/div>\n<p>listening to himself while singing, from 15<sup>th<\/sup>-16<sup>th<\/sup> century Tibet as well as painted mandalas and the sound of OM made visible. Everywhere you turn is sound; walking up or down the spiral staircase where \u201cdrone\u201d (not the aircraft) sounds wax and wane; inside smaller spaces and even in the restrooms.\u00a0 The experience is soothing and pleasant, a sort of inside- your- head white noise. Quoting Risha Lee, the exhibition curator, \u201csound is not limited to what we hear with our ears. It is composed of vibrations that resonate in our body\u2026\u201d Yes indeed, Risha.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3258\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/conch-trumpet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3258\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3258\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/conch-trumpet-300x290.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/conch-trumpet-300x290.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/conch-trumpet.jpg 462w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3258\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Couch trumpet<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The leg bone trumpet is pretty cool as are the sounds it makes which are heard via headphones. Next to it are other kinds of trumpets with their own headphones and their own, distinctive sounds. There is a space devoted to \u201cDeep Listening\u201d and an area where visitors can lie on a leather sofa and take in sounds.\u00a0 I wish the entire experience could be transported to my living room or, better yet, to a bubble I could carry around as I walk through noisy New York.<\/p>\n<p>The only food with sound that came immediately to mind is Snap\u2014Crackle\u2014Pop and somehow Rice Crispies are too banal to go with such a beautiful exhibit. \u00a0Instead, here is a recipe for Curried Potato Salad said to be positively Himalayan.\u00a0 Stay tuned because I\u2019m going that way in very late autumn.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-recipes_curried-potato-salad_1000x1500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3260\" src=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-recipes_curried-potato-salad_1000x1500-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-recipes_curried-potato-salad_1000x1500-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-recipes_curried-potato-salad_1000x1500-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-recipes_curried-potato-salad_1000x1500-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/marigoldonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-recipes_curried-potato-salad_1000x1500.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Curried Potato Salad- Saveur Magazine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2 lb. Yukon gold potatoes<\/p>\n<p>Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste<\/p>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>\u2044<sub>3<\/sub> cup olive oil<\/p>\n<p>4 fresh small red Thai chiles, roughly chopped<\/p>\n<p><sup>3<\/sup>\u2044<sub>4<\/sub> cup plain Greek yogurt<\/p>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>\u2044<sub>2<\/sub> cup tahini<\/p>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>\u2044<sub>2<\/sub> tbsp. curry powder<\/p>\n<p>Zest and juice of 1 lemon<\/p>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>\u2044<sub>3<\/sub> cup roughly chopped cilantro (I omit as I don\u2019t like it)<\/p>\n<p>2 scallions, thinly sliced<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Boil the potatoes in a 6-qt. saucepan of salted water until tender, about 45 minutes; drain and chill. Peel and roughly chop the potatoes; place in a large bowl and set aside.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Heat oil in a 10&#8243; skillet over medium-high heat. Add chiles and cook until golden, about 1 minute; let cool. Transfer oil and chiles to a blender with the yogurt, tahini, curry powder, zest, juice, salt, and pepper; pur\u00e9e until smooth. Pour dressing over potatoes and stir in half each of the cilantro and scallions.
